you know a book is good when it features an f/f pairing (the leads), an m/m pairing (repressed secondary characters), and an m/f pairing (also repressed secondary characters although I want to call one of them the third lead) and they all make you want to chew your own arm off. anyways read the burning kingdoms series by Tasha Suri

"Rao," Aditya called out. "I dreamt of you." ... "I saw your eyes, shining like stars."
("What had happened, to make them shine?")
"I don't know," Aditya said. "But Rao- perhaps one day we'll meet again, on the other side of this war, and you will be able to tell me."
---
"I know now," Aditya said. "Why I dreamt of you as I did. Don't forget what stars are, Rao."
---
What is a star, Rao thought, in Aditya's slurred, smiling voice, but distant fire, reaching for you across worlds?

Okay but like every ship I had in Oleander sword is in shambles by the end and I am hurt. I’m gonna need at least one to survive and be somewhat happy by the end of this series.

Aditya is the Sun
no, seriously, Aditya is អាទិត្យ which means the Sun (in my language)
sick & twisted that Aditya is literally the Sun and he dies by self-immolation... for him to go out in flames, for him to ask Rao to remember the stars... it's cruel, it's -
he's the star; he's Rao's star
he's the Sun

The Lotus Empire final thoughts below because I slept on it and need to Scream:
And to think I had thought this book was starting slow the culmination was so so good and so devastating. Like where to even start. I thought heart’s stone was a total deus ex machina until Aditya spoke to Rao and said the earth holds more promise than the heavens. Saying that to Rao had only been wanting to die to join him, and then to have Rao set off to explore the world was so sweet.
Human Ashok carrying Priya away from the fires but yaksa Ashok running into them?? I’m ILL
Bhumika not having any memories but still saying that she knew her daughter when she saw her killed me. I’m so glad she got to know Priya was still out there in the world.
And godddd. The full circle??? Malini dragging Priya back to the Hirana??? Seeing the figures of the burned like Bhumika saw of the drowned?? Having no faith in any gods except Priya??? Going into the waters because what’s a little more poison??? The piece of Priya inside her that tethered her to the shore???? Believing so strongly in love you become a vessel for its divinity??? Insaneeee I’m going crazy about it

okay so I have more thoughts but firstly
NOT THE DOOMED YAOI 😭
also rao comparing him to the sun just gets me like that one conversation he has with sima and he literally compares his love for aditya to the sun, how really looking at it would’ve destroyed him and like TASHA YOU HAD NO RIGHT to make him say something that beautiful and devastating for it to go so tragically unresolved.
I legitimately am screaming like the way rao loved him so naturally, something that was so ingrained in him that even knowing that the love was right there, there was something so terrifying and dazzling about it, something too whole to put a name to. It was easy and light, but so heavy, so powerful, the way that subtle shift between intimate friendship and something more would’ve given way to something deliciously unpredictable and the way he couldn’t even put a name to it until it was far too late
also just how malini has it clocked ages ago lmaoo
AND THE STATUE KISS WAS SO FUCKING EVIL
I just feel so bad for rao actually, the way he lost everything that mattered to him the most, the people who he was the closest to
how evil is it that he lost both alori and aditya to fire
SPOILERS FOR THE BURNING KINGDOMS TRILOGY AND THE LOTUS EMPIRE
Tasha Suri loves making us suffer for the gay ships (I am scared for her next book)
The fact that Aditya's name literally means "the sun" and Rao compares him to the sun (also side tangent but Aditya's name also means "belonging to the (goddess) Aditi" and is one of the names of the god Surya in Hinduism and how Aditya was the first born and meant to rule the empire who then became a priest and his ultimate demise was to burn-- he was always meant for great paths that Rao would never be allowed to follow)
Honestly the ships in The Burning Kingdoms (Priya + Malini, Aditya + Rao, Bhumika + Jeevan) have such pure devotion in them-- and in Aditya and Rao's relationship we see that devotion even with ADitya gone and AHDIUSFHSIDUFHISDH THE FACT THAT IT TOOK SOOOO LONG FOR RAO TO REALIZE HOW HE FELT UNTIL ADITYA WAS GONE I WILL NEVER FORGIVE MS. TASHA SURI FOR THIS
Malini's gaydar was going off every time Rao was nearby she knew before he did (I still find that so fucking funny)
(I actually threw my laptop across the room when I read the statue kiss™)
OH OH and you bringing up him losing both Alori and Aditya to fire reminded me of how the turning point for Rao in The Lotus Empire was him going to the outskirts of the empire and into the cold snow (and how his ending was traveling to the outskirts of Parijatdvipa and into the cold, unknown, when all that he has lost was taken by the warmth of fire)
